From the slums to Chef de Cuisine
Mariya Un Noun, Chef, Farmhouse Smiling Gecko
Mariya Un Noun is 27 years old and has two small children. She grew up in the slums just outside Phnom Penh. Even as a small child, she had to work hard to support her mother and her five siblings, in a textile factory for $30 a month. That‘s why she had to quit her studies after only three years. Hannes Schmid discovered her and hired as a cook at Smiling Gecko in 2014.
Her talent got noticed and that enabled her to get an apprenticeship at the hotel management school in Lucerne. After her return, she was able to further refine what she had learned and after another visit to Switzerland at the Widder Hotel in Zurich, she was able to enjoy a training with Frank Giovannini at the Restaurant de l‘Hôtel de Ville in Crissier. In the meantime three dishes of Mariya are offered at the Widder Hotel!
Today, Mariya works as a chef for the Cambodian cuisine at Farmhouse Smiling Gecko. With much enthusiasm, she already passes on her knowledge to her team. By training and working at Smiling Gecko, Mariya is able to provide her children with a good school education.
Before the Flying Lunch, Mariya will talk about her eventful life. Let yourself be inspired and pampered by Mariya‘s wonderful cooking!
